While a revolution is a mass uprising that seizes the government, a coup d’etat is the quick and sudden overthrow of government by a small number. It may or may not be violent. Usually a small group of politicians or generals has the incumbent leaders arrested in the interest of the state and places themselves in power.
The term is French for “a strike to the state” or “blow to the government.”
